Hearing God Over The Noise of Life
Have you ever asked God to tell you what the plan for your life is?
I know I have, and I’ve done it so often it’s impossible to count. But, what I’m finding out about God’s plan for my life, is that it comes with more than a few caveats. First, there’s the plan you had for God to enact in your life, then the time it takes for you to realize that isn’t quite what God had in mind for you. Followed by bouts of severe confusion and even depression over feeling lost, all while wondering why God isn’t moving heaven and earth for you fulfill your destiny.
If this sounds familiar, the good news is that you’re not alone because I’m right there with you.
The other thing I’ve come to conclude is that as soon as you understand the plan that God designed for you, and you take a step of faith toward that plan, it’s as if gravity itself has turned against you and your world turns upside down. People who were once faithful friends become your most sincere critics, and strangers become your best source of encouragement. It sends you into a daze of “I dunno’s”, I don’t know what, why, when or how and my favorite, I don’t know if (fill in the blank). We can even reach a point (at least I have) where we say, I don’t know any more “if” this really is my destiny.
So what happened to us?
I think I have a plausible answer but I’ll let you decide.
I think somewhere along the way we lost communications.
Much like the space shuttle would lose communications with the control center, we lose communication with God who is our control center. We lose it in the busyness of accomplishment and in planning for the future. Even after all the effort of trying to hear God and finally hearing what His plan for our lives is, we unplug our communications and try to make the plan work on our own. (I’m guilty too).
It’s the same as having someone cut you off in the middle of you saying something you know would be important to the person you’re speaking to? I wonder how many times I’ve done that to God, when He’s trying to lead me a certain way. Thank God for His forgiveness or I’d be screwed!
So, how can we stay in communication with the ultimate destiny creator?
Well the Bible says to: Commit everything you do to the LORD.
Trust him, and he will help you. He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn,
and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. Be still in the presence of the LORD,
and wait patiently for him to act…. those who trust in the LORD will possess the land. (Psalm 37:7-9)
The Bible also says: Be still and KNOW that I am God! (Psalm 46:10)
In other words, we need to be still and allow God to direct us through the Holy Spirit by following our peace. We need to trust that God has it all figured out. Yes, I know it’s harder than it sounds, especially for me because I’m a driven and purposed (another way to say impatient) individual.
One last thing about the world being turned upside down, if you have peace that your following God’s plan, then you can pretty much expect the enemy of God to try to throw up all the roadblocks he can in an attempt to prevent you from following God’s perfect plan, but it’s nothing more than a test of our character.
Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the LORD tested Joseph’s character. (Psalm 105:19)
And when we pass the test we can expect the promise of Proverbs 10:22 which says; The blessing of the LORD provide wealth with no painful toil for it.
So, in simple terms, listen for God and when you hear Him, follow his instructions even when they don’t make sense and you’ll find the blessing you been searching for and achieve the destiny He already had planned for you.
