Unfailing Love of God
John 1: 17
“For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.”
What does it mean to have unfailing love?
When I look back on my life and all the things that I’ve done; it is easy for me to conclude that the blessings I have today, if God’s love was based on my ability to remain faithful to His Word, I am undeserving.
You see I was saved in my early teen years and at the time I was of the understanding that my expression of love toward God was solely based on my abilities to follow His commandments and there are scriptures that back that idea, like 1 John 2:4 “If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth.”
This as well as many other scriptures have been taught to mean that if we aren’t righteous enough to follow God’s commandments that somehow we fall out of the grace of His Love for us and that doesn’t line up with the common sense of God’s Word.
If we were to be measured by our ability to follow the commandments of the Word then why was it necessary for Jesus to die for us? He died for us for the very reason that we’d never be righteous enough to follow God’s commandments and we needed an unblemished sacrifice to cover our inequities. So Jesus’ death provided a new covenant between us and God; a covenant of Grace shown through His love for us.
We only have to decide by what method we will follow God’s commandments; by the Law of Moses but if we choose the law we are incapable of righteousness but by the blood of Jesus we are made righteous. We aren’t deserving of God’s grace but Jesus is and if we have Jesus in our heart, God looks at our hears and all He sees is His son who is without sin.
As Christians we can’t continue to straddle the two covenants. The Law which was before Christ and the Grace that came by His sacrifice. If we choose to live under the Grace of God through the blood of Jesus then we must love each other regardless of the sins we or they commit.
It’s easy if we operate through Christ but we must remember that we have an accuser who reminds us that the law exists and how we don’t measure up to it. The enemy of God wants us to remain under the law because that is the source of his power and what makes us sinners. Without the law there is no sin and even in the garden, what made Adam and Eve sinners was the law of the forbidden fruit. So we must resist the deceiver’s attempt to put us back under the old covenant and must learn to embrace the new covenant of Love through the Grace of God.
For example when you look at a homosexual can you look past their sin? Can you love them because Christ loves them? It’s a hard question but one that needs to be asked and I don’t ask to point out the sin of homosexuality or the sin of judging others but to show you that Jesus came to show all sinners that God loves them.
The same can be applied to any sin; if we’re to be the hands and feet of Jesus we only need to acknowledge Jesus in all that we do. By showing the world the Love of Christ we open their hearts to His sacrifice for them and in that moment when the Holy Spirit enters into their hearts the transformation of their actions begins. As it was with me and I’m certain with you too. When we come to know Jesus the enemy already has reminded us of why God can’t love us and of all the commandments of God we’ve broken God’s; all while trying to convince us that we don’t deserve and therefore can’t receive God’s grace and love. So it’s not necessary for us to also remind them of the sins they’ve committed because it’s the Holy Spirit’s place to lead people to the truth.
1 John 2:27
“But you have received the Holy Spirit and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true—it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.”
Unfailing love is simply loving us in spite of our sin; if God does that for us then as Christians shouldn’t we also strive to love those who don’t deserve our love just as God has done for us?
We only need to follow Jesus’ lead and love one another and it’s in the Grace and Love of God through the Holy Spirit that we’ll follow his commandments bringing us closer to righteousness through love, and at the same time we can take comfort in knowing that when we do screw up we have Jesus acting on our behalf before the Father pleading our case.
1 John 1:1
“I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous.”
God loves you enough that He sent His only son; an act that no man would be willing to do, to be the ultimate sacrifice and why? So that we could once again enter into fellowship with Him and all I’m saying is that if God loves us that much then maybe we ought to attempt to also love those who don’t deserve our love and in that we show the world how much God loves them.
God loves you and so do I …. May God bless you with an abundance of His love for you today!
